COLISEUM (US) + BISON BC (CAN) + KVELERTAK (N)

Since 2003, Coliseum’s powerful, classic hardcore and punk inspired sounds, exhaustive tour schedules, and unabashed independent streak has earned it a devoted fan base, critical acclaim, and the respect of its peers.

They issued a self-titled debut album on Level Plane in 2004, followed by the Goddamage EP on Auxiliary Records in 2005, before joining the Relapse Records roster in 2007 for the release of their second album, No Sa…lvation. Following the release of No Salvation, the band embarked on countless tours in North America, Europe, Australia and Japan, with Converge, High On Fire, Mono, Napalm Death, Baroness, Russian Circles, Torche, Integrity, Strike Anywhere, Dillinger Escape Plan, and many others.

In 2009, Coliseum released the “True Quiet / Last Wave” 7” single via Deathwish Inc before disappearing from public view to work on their third long-player, House With A Curse, out June 22, 2010 on Temporary Residence.

Having mastered the art of the straight-forward punk record, it’s no surprise that a change was in order for Coliseum. Named after a note written in the 1925 movie version of Phantom of the Opera, House With A Curse shows that for Coliseum, the battle still rages on, but the tactics have changed; the blitzkrieg has given way to a style that is more deliberate and self-assured. Produced by the band and mixed by J. Robbins (Jawbox), House finds the band exploring a multitude of tempos, song structures and instrumentation, with appearances from friends including Will Oldham (Palace, Bonnie “Prince” Billy), Jason Noble (Shipping News, Rachels, Rodan), Peter Searcy of Squirrel Bait and more.

House With A Curse is not just a new and exciting chapter in the Coliseum story, it’s a celebration of the underground music community that inspired its very existence.

BISON BC (CAN)

On BISON B.C.’s latest slab, ‘Dark Ages’, relentless touring – with the likes of Priestess, Baroness, 3 Inches Of Blood, and more – has fine tuned the band’s dedication to the riff to metallic perfection. ‘Dark Ages’ breathes like a rabid animal that you’d find tied up in Wino’s backyard. It’s Flying V’s, analog perfection, loud & sludgy, played by hairy dudes in dirty denim jackets.

A bison is “a big, hairy, strong animal,” says James Farwell, who plays guitar and sings for BISON B.C. That could as just as well describe the band, which rose from the ass-end of the continent in Vancouver, to utter its doomed, plaintive call, and tramples through the constellations on its four shaggy limbs (James, Dan And, Masa Anzai and Brad Mackinnon). Ghostly, windswept prairies, the mythical haunts of native lore: it is all there. Self-described “Canadian dirtbags” and veterans of Vancouverʼs deep thrash and indie scenes, they are hitting their stride and offering up a new soundtrack for our last party before certain extinction. There is illness, abuse, apocalypse, and French horn.

Their first Metal Blade release, ‘Quiet Earth’, showed what that earth’s last sound might be like. It was heavy, sick, and crazy; stomping and banging, elegiac with cello. Just beneath the rock they described a bad trip through a devastated world where resigned dignity and camaraderie with the friends that remain are the only consolations.

“This mixture of rowdiness and gentleness is very much of their hard-living, hard-loving hometown: fucked-up modernity’s last outpost on the rim of a vast, menacing wilderness. In their new release, James sings, “Vancouverʼs an empty bottle, our dying thirst causing problems. Stand at dawn, the beginning of something heartfelt and replaceable.” No matter where we are, this is what it has come to in this age. So let’s listen to these gentlemen and rock out together.

“…intense, guitar heavy thrash that would make even Municipal Waste step back in awe.”

Alternative Press

“…they dare to approach the maniacal majesty of present-day High on Fire.” Decibel Magazine

“…unpretentious, mountainous rock…frequently sound like Mastodon at their most straightforward, coming impressively close to that band’s mastery of the riff.”

Terrorizer Magazine

“Heavy, man. Real heavy. Jean-jacket heavy…If Mastodon had spent more time listening to Anthrax, they might sound like Vancouver’s Bison B.C.”

Rollingstone.com

“everything you could ask for in a metal band.” NewOrleans.com

“The name is Bison b.c. and they are heavy as fuck…”

KVELERTAK (N)

Kvelertak shamelessly draw inspiration from every corner of something that could fit into their idea of good hard-hitting and catchy rock’n’roll. Regardless of genre, but always truthful to the basic idea of the band; good songs performed with the tongue-in-cheek attitude of their punk-rock pioneers. Unlike the majority of heavier bands they sing in their native language – adding even more character to their already unique sound.

Releasing their much anticipated debut album, Kvelertak are already well known in Norway for their furious live energy and catchy, melodic, metal-inspired punk rock. Outside Norway they are fairly unknown… yet.

It is a classic story; A bunch of good friends decide to create a band. It turns out to be a very good band, and from the start in 2007 things have been going very fast for these young lads from the west coast of Norway. National radio airplay and stunning live performances have taken them to some of the biggest festivals in the country and also to the infamous Roskilde festival in 2009, where they performed in front of 3000 crazy fans. Quite astonishing for a (then) unsigned act with a few demos.

A classic performance at the Eurosonic Festival in Holland spawned this review in the festival paper:

“Norway and black metal are hand in glove. A bloody serious matter at that, with emphasis on bloody and serious. High time for a more light-hearted look at the case, preferably by a compatriot. Enter Kvelertak, a delicious motley crew from Stavanger that uses the Turbonegro method for its black metal approach: an orgy of thickly sliced punk rock and good old rock & roll in IMAX 3D format. In other words: completely over the top, these six rocking rascals with a three-man guitar front, going for all sacred cows in the aforementioned genres with undisguised fun and catchy melodies. Whether the listener will like it? Let’s put it this way: once gripped by Kvelertak you never want anything else.”

Late 2009 Kvelertak inked a deal with Indie Recordings and the search for a producer started. On top of the list was the name of Kurt Ballou of Converge, and it is no surprise the band went ballistic when he agreed to produce the album in his God City studio in Salem, MA.

Guitarist Bjarte Lund Rolland comments:

“Kurt was on top of our dream-list of producers. His records always sound amazing; they have that driving energy and the punchy drums we were looking for. To have him say yes to our humble request was the best thing that could have happened to this record. Kurt had a plan from the beginning, and was able to produce exactly the sound we were hoping for.”

The story actually repeated itself when it came to finding the right artwork. All time favorite of the band, John Baizley of Baroness, heard a demo while on tour and felt he absolutely had to do the art, which Kvelertak absolutely agreed on.

From the very first demos Kvelertak had a tradition of bringing in people whose work they admired to guest on their songs. Early demos include classic performances of amongst others Nattefrost (Carpathian Forest). The debut album keeps the tradition alive and sees great performances by Hoest (Taake), Andreas Tylden (JR Ewing and Altaar), Ivar Nikolaisen (Silver), and Ryan McKenney (Trap Them). All of which add their unique touch to their respectively tracks.

This summer Kvelertak heads out on a massive European tour with Converge and Kylesa, marking the first European tour for the band.

Brutally catchy punkrock/metal with a taste of groovy darkness!
