This 1997 Japanese film was written, directed and edited by, as well as starring Japanese filmmaker Takeshi Kitano. The film’s score was composed by renowned Japanese composer, Joe Hisaishi. This was their fourth collaboration. Hana-bi (花火,) is the Japanese word for “fireworks”. Like most of Kitano’s films, Hana-bi looks washed-out; it looks dreamy, and yet the violence is stark and abrupt. People are shot in the head and stabbed in the face. Blood is shed in liberal quantities. All this is …

  • 20:15 Moloch filmklubb: Dog Days (Hundstage), 2001, MOLOCH!

This Austrian feature film is characterized by a disturbing naturalistic style, which is a trademark of Ulrich Seidl’s directing (Guru Werner Herzog ranks Seidl among his top 10 filmmakers). Hundstage stars a mix of professional and amateur actors, and it became mildly controversial for its depiction of unsimulated sex scenes. With its improvised performances and willingness to stare straight into the abyss of human cruelty, Hundstage is a dark and edgy piece. As its non-professional actors are …
