18.00 DEBATE: RUSSIA: CRIMINALIZING OPPOSITION?

On the evening of the opening of the 22nd Winter Olympics we will discuss the state of human rights in Russia. Under Putin’s rule, laws are being implemented that discriminate against sexual and other minorities and limit the influence of civil society. Being in opposition is becoming increasingly difficult, and sometimes illegal. Where is Russia headed?

With: Julie Wilhelmsen (NUPI) and Bjørn Engesland (The Norwegian Helsinki Committee). Other participants to be announced.

19.00 DEBATE: ACTIVISM

“Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy;
it is absolutely essential to it.” – Howard Zinn

Mike Bonnano from the Yes Men will be here to lead a discussion on activism. We are living in the age of popular movements: never before have there been so many informal protest movements around the world. The Arab Spring (and winter), Indignados, Occupy, large demonstrations in many countries against government corruption, undemocratic practices and wars. The list is long.

It seems there is a growing discontent and disillusion with the established systems. But what is activism actually? Why do people become activists? And what can activism achieve?

With: Inna Shevchenko (FEMEN), Arash and Arman Riahi (directors of Everyday Rebellion) and Ahmed Zaino (activist from Syria). Benedikte Pryneid Hansen (attac). Other participants to be confirmed. Moderator: Mike Bonnano (The Yes Men).

20.30 CONCERT: OHNESORG

Ohnesorg will play between and after the talks and debates.
