KONSERT: YA TOSIBA
A couple of years ago Zuzu Zakaria a.k.a DJ Zuzu and half of Ya Tosiba band traveled as part of her research project to the whole Absheron peninsula in Azerbaijan- in search of the keys to a poetic improvisation Meykhana. The name of the genre comes from the designation of traditional Turkic/Persian Mediaeval public wine houses and taverns, which in turn originates from two Persian words: mey (wine) and hane (house). In Ottoman literature these are commonly regarded as Sufi lodges and places for religious gatherings or musical and poetic venues. In Sufi and Hurufi doctrines, the polysemy mey (wine) has metaphorical meanings relating to a spiritual intoxication or intoxication in the name of God.

DJ IzuzuBy visiting Meykaha venues Zuzu acquired a vast archive of poetry and lyrics spanning from the beginning of previous century, both from written and oral sources. She felt that the material had both a huge conservation value, also could be very suitable for contemporary western underground music. ”Global fusion" is a term coined in 1980’s to describe the postmodern transnational mixtures between different cultural heritages. Like Pizza Americana or Peter Gabriel’s recordings with Pakistani Sufi singers. If we adapt the term, we can wholeheartedly say that music can’t actually get much more global than it is on Ya Tosiba’s debut ep. This splendid piece of black wax is produced by Finnish skweee pioneer Mesak the other half of Ya Tosiba. Their first single were released on Harmönia records in October 2012.

Together they applied old meykhana texts with their traditional eastern rhythmic metric system, named Aruz to the Scandinavian skweee-music style. Skweee is often compared to hip-hop, dub, electro and funk, and it usually has complex rhythms unlike most of the western club music. On this music heavy electronic drum beats are high fiving bubbling analogue synthesizers and traditional eastern instruments, deliciously topped with Dj Zuzu’s hypnotic Azerbaijani rapping. Bizarre, yet beautiful: Music that is equally suitable for dischotèques and home listening. The fantastic remixes are provided by the legendary German synthesizer visionaries Mouse on Mars and the Turkish masters of mesmerizing psychedelia, Baba ZuLa, if you are interested to get a copy of their first 12’

It has been said that the development of communication technology obscures forms of music and increases musical homogeneity and blurring of regional identities. We don’t believe in that type of gibberish. And we definitely don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing for the world to play music together. If you’re in doubt, put this record on your turntable, drop the needle to the groove and crank the volume up.

Telemuseet og Henie Onstad Kunstsenter har samarbeidet om å rekonstruere Arne Nordheims lydinstallasjonen Lydbar (1970). Verket er en interaktiv lyttestasjon som består av 20 analoge telefonapparater av 67-modellen koblet opp til elektroniske lydsignaler. Komponist/musiker Helge Sten aka Deathprod har bearbeidet Nordheims innspillinger. Publikum kan lage sin egne komposisjoner ved å holde opp flere telefonrør samtidig. Rekonstruksjonen er støttet av Norsk Kulturråd.
