Geoff Berner er en kanadisk singer-songwriter som spiller en helt spesiell versjon av klezmer musikk med trekkspill og særegne tekster og vokal.

Debutalbumet We Shall Not Flag or Fail, We Shall Go On to the End (2003) inneholder bemerkelsesverdige sanger som «Clown and Bard», «Iron Grey», og «Maginot Line».

Geoff Berner is a strange figure. What does he do? He is a songwriter. His songs have been recorded by diverse musical acts such as the Be Good Tanyas, Kaizers Orchestra, Rae Spoon, RotFront and others. His compositions are full of humour, darkness, love, drinking, and some politics.

He is an accordion player. He performs his songs sometimes solo, sometimes with a band. He earns his living doing this(!) He has toured in 18 countries, and performed on national radio in 7 of those countries. He has played numerous international festivals. He recently was invited by Billy Bragg to perform on his Leftfield stage at the Glastonbury Festival, in the UK.

He is a klezmer musician. That is, most of the songs he writes these days are in the style of traditional Eastern European Jewish folk music, the music of his heritage. He also plays old traditional Yiddish songs. He has played at many Jewish culture festivals, including Klezmore in Vienna, and the Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto. His first klezmer-based album, Whiskey Rabbi, came out in 2005. Now some people call him “The Whiskey Rabbi”, because of his…wisdom. His last full album, Victory Party, won the Canadian Folk Music Award in the “Pushing the Boundaries” category. He is a novelist. His first book, Festival Man, was published by Dundurn Press in October, 2013. Maclean’s Magazine, Canada’s National News Magazine, says that Festival Man “is absolutely required reading for anyone who’s ever played, worked or fallen down drunk at a folk festival. But Berner’s wit transcends a niche audience in the same way you don’t need to know anything about New Orleans to appreciate A Confederacy of Dunces. “ And Quill and Quire, Canada’s publishing industry bible, says “The book’s humour resides in its truthfulness as much as the writing itself.“ If his work has a common through-line, it is that it often makes you feel like you want to laugh, cry, and be horrified, all at the same time. It’s a strange feeling. It’s not for everyone. But it has earned him a sizable cult following throughout many countries, especially among other musicians. Also, physicists seem to like him a lot. Well, that’s a start, anyway. Be assured that even if you don’t wind up enjoying Geoff Berner, you’ll have to admit, you haven’t seen anything much like him before.
