_Don’t worry, it’s a bad, bad world, be happy. _

-Utstillingen tar utgangspunkt i boken The Institute of Art and Crime av Sebastian Makonnen Kjølaas, en illustrert 123-siders dialog utgitt og distribuert av Torpedo Press.

-Donny Johnson, som soner tre livstidsdommer for mord, vil vise abstrakte malerier. Man vil få muligheten til å se et originalt tresnitt av den seksuelt perverterte religiøse kunstneren Eric Gill, og en skisse til en forfalskning av Modigliani tegnet av mester-forfalskeren Elmyr de Hory. Mor & Jerry vil vise en eksplosiv video. Constance Tenvik et patologisk tankekart.

-Et Tableau Vivant i samarbeid med Siri Hjorth vil gjenspeile en sentral scene fra boken og fylle midtpunktet i utstillingssalen.

-Malin Rosa Mertens fra Baratt Due Musikkinstitutt vil spille Johann Sebastian Bach sin cellosuite no. 3 på åpningskvelden mellom 19:00 og 21:00.

The Institute of Art and Crime har nettopp åpnet. Sammen med den nyervervede kuratoren er museumsstyret villige til å utforske subversivitet lenger enn noen andre før dem og lokker med både sensasjonshunger og kritisk kapital. Fortellingen er et dramatisert møte mellom kunstneren, psykopaten og rusmisbrukeren som tilfeldigvis møtes på en parkbenk. Møtet utarter seg i dialogens form som en rundreise gjennom instituttet, der kuratoren gir en narrativ fremstilling av kriminalitetens element i kunsten. Den gode smak oppløses i foraktens kalde, hvite kube og grepet strammes gradvis rundt hovedpersonenes grunnleggende livssyn. Historien viser i illustrativ form kunstinstitusjonen som vaklevorent univers og skrøpelig fundert diskurs. Bokens kritiske refleksjon kan leses som en kastet hanske, et bad i en kunstoffenlig andedam, eller eksponering av skittent undertøy. Et dypdykk i estetisk skamfølelse bare de færreste vil vedkjenne seg.

INFORMASJON OM KUNSTNERE PRESENTERT I UTSTILLINGEN

DONNY JOHNSON – Født 1960 , abstrakt maler. Fengslet etter å ha drept en mann og deretter angrepet en fangevokter. Nå soner han tre livstidsdommer på Pelican Bay State Prison i California, hvor han er utsatt for 23 timers isolasjon i en enmannscelle uten vinduer. Representert ved fire malerier på postkort lånt ut av Stephen Kurtz, som er ansvarlig for Donny Johnson samling. Maleriene er laget med belegg av M&M’s, vann, og en pensel laget av Johnsons eget hår, grunnet strenge regler for hva han har lov til å oppbevare på cellen sin. Johnson har uttalt at uten sine malerier, ville han begått selvmord. Verkene som blir vist er: (1) Flight (2) Spiral (3) Bird of Paradise (4) Me neither.

ELMYR de HORY – født 1905, var en berømt ungarsk forfalsker, som bodde i Frankrike, Mexico og Ibiza. Han forfalsket hovedsakelig Picasso, Renoir, Matisse og Modigliani. Begikk selvmord i 1976, i frykten for å bli fengslet etter hans ulovlige konglomorat begynte å smuldre. De Hory ble for allmenheten kjent som en av protagonistene i Orson Wells film F for Fake. I denne utstillingen representert ved En foreløpig skisse for en forfalskning av Modigliani (1968), lånt ut av Anne-Laure Baudoin, en Paris basert samler. Blyant på papir.

ERIC GILL – født i 1882, var en av Storbritannias mest respekterte kunstnere. Hans skulptur Prospero & Ariel er å finne i BBC:s Broadcasting House, og Skapelsen av Adam er i lobbyen til Palais des Nations, nå det europeiske hovedkvarteret til FN i Genève. Han skapte også en mye brukt font, Gill Sans. Etter hans død ble det avslørt at han hadde et seksuelt forhold til sine to døtre, sin egen søster, og familiens hund. Ikke fullt så respektert lenger, har kunstnerskapet hans gått i glemmeboken. Representert ved tresnittet Performer on Stage (1920), laget for Ditchling Dramatic Club. Publisert i Graveringer av Eric Gill, Douglas Cleverdon, Birmingham, England (1929).

SIRI HJORTH – født 1986, bor og arbeider i Oslo, med skulptur, performance og installasjon ofte med hovedvekt på tekstil. Hjorth vil presentere utstillingens midtpunkt, et konstruert Tableau Vivant i samarbeid med Sebastian Makonnen Kjølaas som forholder seg til en av protagonistene i boken og hvor en sentral scene fra narrativet gjenspeiles. Skulpturen som supplementerer tablået er en pastisj av Ernst Barlach The Avanger fra 1914. Barlach, i ung alder en nasjonalist og krigshisser, ble etter første verdenskrig pasifist, noe som førte til at arbeidene hans ble en del av den beryktede utstillingen Entartete Kunst (Degenerert kunst) i Tyskland (1937) i regi av Adolf Ziegler og nazistene.

MOM & JERRY – Den mangefasetterte Mor, og hennes skitne sønn Jerry har en lidenskap for kunst, musikk, fester, glitter og mote. I tillegg til å være kunstnere, anser de seg selv som outlaws, Djs, levende skulpturer, talkshow-verter, TV- personligheter, filmstjerner, og progressive Broadway dansere. Mor og Jerry kan sees som gjenvinningsmaskiner i en monstrøs, virtuelle verden av søppel. De vil til denne utstillingen vise videoen The world is a cruise (2014) og verket Line up your fun (2014).

CONSTANCE TENVIK – Født 1990, arbeider med performance, tegning, skulptur og installasjon. Tenvik er representert ved et tankekart utarbeidet gjennom å ha fulgt bokprosjektet over flere år (2014).

SEBASTIAN MAKONNEN KJØLAAS – Født 1985, forfatteren og illustratøren bak The Institute of Art and Crime, arrangøren av utstillingen og den konstruerte Tableau Vivant i samarbeid med Siri Hjorth.

Don’t worry, it’s a bad, bad world, be happy.

- An exhibition based on the theme of the publication The Institute of Art and Crime, by Sebastian Makonnen Kjølaas, a 123 page, black and white illustrated dialog between four characters; the Artist, the Curator, the Psychopath and the Junkie, published and distributed by Torpedo Press.

- Donny Johnson, serving three life sentences in jail, will showcase abstract paintings. The master forger Elmyr de Hory will be represented by an sketch for a forgery of Modigliani, and the sexually perverted religious artist Eric Gill by an original wood cut. Mom & jerry will show an explosive video, and Constance Tenvik a pathological mind map.

- A Tableau Vivant in collaboration with Siri Hjorth will mirror a pivotal scene from the book and occupy the main focal point of the exhibition.

- Malin Rosa Mertens from Baratt Due Music Institute will play Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello-suite no. 3 in C Major at the opening night between 07:00 og 09:00 p.m.

The Institute of Art and Crime has just opened, and the newly acquired museum curator sets out to explore subversive themes with a set of sensational and critical tools. The story unfolds as a dramatized encounter between the artist, the psychopath, and the junky, who by accident meet on a park bench. The subsequent visit to the institute gradually degenerates as the curator gives a narrative representation of a wide variety of criminal elements in art. Good taste dissolves as the cold, contemptuous white cube tightens its grip on the characters convictions. The book can be seen as dirty underwear, depicting in allegorical form the art institution as a wicked world of dilapidated discourse. The Institute of Art and Crime is a journey through aesthetic shame. The repulsive kind.

INFORMATION ABOUT ARTISTS REPRESENTED IN THE EXHIBITION

DONNY JOHNSON – Born 1960, abstract painter. Incarcerated after killing a man and then attacking a prison guard. Now serving three life sentences at the Pelican Bay State Prison in California, where he’s subjected to 23 hour lock down in a solitary cell with no windows. Represented by four paintings on postcards provided by Stephen Kurtz, which is responsible for Donny Johnson’s collection. The paintings are made with the coating of M&M’s, water, and a paintbrush made of Johnson’s own heir, as there is strict regulations for what he’s allowed to keep in his cell. Johnson has stated that without his paintings, he would kill himself. Paintings: (1) Flight (2) Spiral (3) Bird of Paradise (4) Me neither.

ELMYR de HORY – born 1905, was a famous Hungarian forger. Lived in France, Mexico and Ibiza before committing suicide in 1976, fearing incarceration after his massive forging enterprise started to crumble. He mainly forged Picasso, Renoir, Matisse and Modigliani. He is one of the main protagonists in Orson Wells film F for Fake. Represented by A preliminary sketch for a forgery of Modigliani, (1968), provided by Anne-Laure Baudoin, a Paris based collector. Pencil on paper.

ERIC GILL – born in 1882, was one of Britain’s most respected artists. His sculpture Prospero & Ariel is to be found in BBC’s Broadcasting House, and the Creation of Adam is in the lobby of Palais des Nations, now the European headquarters of the United Nations in Geneva. He also created a widely used font, Gill Sans. After his death it was revealed that he had a sexual relationship to his daughters, his sister, and the family dog. Not quite as respected anymore, he has entered the realm of obscurity. Represented by the wood engraving Performer on Stage (1920), made for Ditchling Dramatic Club. Printed on full sheet of cream wove paper, as published in Engravings by Eric Gill, Douglas Cleverdon, Birmingham, England (1929). Unsigned.

SIRI HJORTH – born 1986, live and work in Oslo, Norway, with sculpture, performance, installation and textile. She will showcase a constructed Tableau Vivant in collaboration with Sebastian Makonnen Kjølaas which relate to one of the protagonists of the book. It is to be found in the center of the exhibition hall and will mirror a pivotal scene from the narrative. The sculpture is a pastiche of Ernst Barlach’s The Avanger (1914). Barlach was in his youth a war enthusiast, but became a pacifist after the atrocity of World War I. This was the reason why he was exhibited at the infamous Degenerate art exhibition in Germany (1937) organized by Adolf Ziegler and the Nazi Party.

MOM & JERRY – The multi-faceted Mom, and her dirty son Jerry have a passion for art, music, parties, glitter and fashion. In addition to being artists, they consider themselves rebels, outlaws, Djs, living sculptures, talk show hosts, TV personalities, movie stars, and progressive Broadway dancers. Mom and Jerry can be seen as recycling machines in the monstrous, virtual city of garbage. They will showcase the video The world is a cruise (9 min 34 sec, 2014) and a piece titled Line up your fun (2014).

CONSTANCE TENVIK – Born 1990, works with performance, drawing, sculpture and installation. She will for this exhibition showcase a mind map based on the content of the publication and her relation to the process (2014).

SEBASTIAN MAKONNEN KJØLAAS – born 1985, writer and illustrator of The Institute of Art and Crime, the organizer of the exhibition and the constructed Tableau Vivant in collaboration with Siri Hjorth.
