Demon's Mouth presents exhibition 4: Nelis Van Hulten - (Feelings)

[Bilde]

The questions and wonder that images and events from daily life evoke in Nelis van Hulten, is translated into work on paper and sculptures. Actions and moods of humans and animals and the similarities between them, fascinate and inspire him. Desire, power(lessness), hope (despair) and transience are themes that are a result of this fascination and that form recurring themes in his work.

The imagination of these themes develops during the physical process of drawing and sculpting. Not only observations, but also the dialogue that arises between Van Hulten and his work lead this process. The image should be convincing by itself and the language that it speaks. Nelis employs sober and minimalist imaging, leaving out what is irrelevant and trying to get as close as possible to the essence of the image.

The works on paper and sculptures create an interplay in which a sculpture can lead to a work on paper and vice versa. Some of the sculptures seem drawn, and some works on paper seen like construction drawings, while this may not have been the intention.

Nelis van Hulten (heeswijk-Dinther 1978) graduated from the Academy of Art and Design in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2002. He lives and works in Eindhoven.
