In 1838, the French expedition vessel named La Rechêrche leaves to rescue a ship, lost in Scandinavian waters somewhere between Iceland and Greenland. With a crew consisting of renowned French and European scientists, as well as prominent artists, such as François-Auguste Biard, court painter to King Louis Philippe I, the expedition sets out to explore the Arctic regions. It becomes a fantastic voyage that will spark the imagination of writers, artists and dreamers for many decades.

At the invitation of The Boiler Room, Paris-based L’inlassable Galerie conceives an exhibition echoing this first co-operation between France and Scandinavia. Thought like an expedition, La Rechêrche brings together the contemporary work of three European and one Scandinavian artist who share the sentiments inspired by this aesthetic of exploration while nourishing a certain fascination for the territories of the Far North.

Around a famous engraving by François-Auguste Biard (1799-1882), original witness of the first discoveries of La Recherche, this exhibition deploy Carolina Corbasson’s stellar atlases and her poetic maps of Norway or the American skies, Rina Charlott Lindgren’s desolate and poetic Nordic landscapes meets the imaginary scientific studies of boreal phenomena by Camille Benarab-Lopez. Anaïs Ysebaert’s fantastic bestiary will complete this extensive travel journal. Drawing historic reference, the exhibition also includes a work of Arthur de Capell Brooke (1791-1858), the first Englishman to explore the North Cape.

The exhibition La Rechêrche is curated by John Ferrere and Ulysse Geissler, founders and joint directors of L’Inlassable L’Inlassable Galerie, in collaboration with Joakim Borda-Pedreira.
