Ultima Academy is a series of talks, lectures and panel discussions and is free and open to anyone interested in knowing more about the ideas that underlie this year’s festival programme.

Is tradition sacred or must it be assaulted in order to survive? Music is constantly challenging itself in a dialogue with its own past. Seeking to renew and extend the traditions of the Norwegian Korps (military brass bands), two of the nation’s most prestigious wind ensembles will be playing contemporary commissions and free improvisations during Ultima. In this talk you can meet representatives from the Sjøforsvarets musikkorps (Kate Augestad) and Det Norske Blåseensemble (Geir Lysne) and hear how they are supplementing military marches with avant garde composition and open-ended jazz. Peter Tornquist headmaster of Norwegian Academy of Music and composer Therese Birkelund Ulvo will also be a part of the panel.
