Smadar Dreyfus & Dr Stefan Nowotny // ‘Cultural Mistranslations’

[Bilde]

We live in a condition of cultural translation, between migrations, occupations and multiple inhabitations. Translation is never literal, it does not involve the direct transfer of meaning. Instead we think of translation as different sensitivities and mingled ambiences. This event begins with a performative talk by Smadar Dreyfus addressing her practice. Philosopher, Dr. Stefan Nowotny will speak about translation in terms of articulating social relations, and questions relating to the ‘politics of translation’, before the two are in conversation together and with the audience.

Smadar Dreyfus was born in Israel and is London based since 1990. Her projects use documentary sound recordings to excavate scenes of everyday life for a reverberation of a wider socio-political context. Solo exhibitions include: Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin 2014, Magasin III, Stockholm 2009, Extra City, Antwerpen 2008, IKON Birmingham 2005 and Victoria Miro, London 2006. Selected Group exhibitions: the 2011 Folkestone Triennial, S.M.A.K. Gent 2010, Mediations Biennial, Poznan 2010, ArTLV Biennale, Tel Aviv 2009, MUSAC Leon, Spain 2006, and the 9th Istanbul Biennial, 2005.

Stefan Nowotny is a philosopher, a lecturer in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths and a member of the Vienna-based eipcp (European Institute for Progressive Cultural Policies.
