‘Refract / Recurse’ is an audio-visual performance by Dutch sound artist Tijs Ham and Bergen contemporary visual artist Birk Nygaard. The project combines scattered laser projection and live electronics consisting of feedbacking analog mixers that generate expressive soundscapes. In order to form shapes in a laser projector, a tiny mirror is making rapid movements inside of the device. These mechanical movements make subtle sounds that are usually barely audible. By amplifying the tiny sounds and incorporating them into a live electronics setup, a unique audio-visual link starts to emerge. This direct connection forms the starting point of ‘Refract / Recurse’ The laserbeams are refracted, lighting up the space in a hypnotizing pulse while the music slowly builds up to an all encompassing sonic wave. The audience is taken on an abstract journey through musical landscapes and shimmering lights…Tijs Ham (‘81) is a soundartist from the Netherlands. Next to his work for STEIM (The Studio for electro- Instrumental Music) he has an artistic practice that focusses on the musical expression of chaotic processes. After several residencies at BEK and many other institutions, Tijs will spend the first three months of 2017 working on the project ’Refract / Recurse’, during a residency at USF Verftet

Birk Nygaard is a renowned light and video artist in Norway. He develops visual designs for different expressions on stage – be it a concert, theatre or dance. He makes installations and initiates projects within art performance. His works have been displayed at Bergen Art Hall and by Raff Design and he has worked with festivals such as Ekko and Piksel on a number of occasions.

Ivo Bol magnifies the atmosphere of lost and found sounds in his compositions, looking for beautiful little details that will flourish in a new sound world. he studied history, and played bass guitar in different experimental bands since high school. After a bike accident Ivo was unable to play bass for a couple of months, and became increasingly involved with sampling, electronic music, electroacoustic music and sound design.

Roald van Dillewijn utilizes a combination of hardware and software techniques to achieve new ways to explore vast sonic universes of ambient, drone and noise. Next to his solo projects he also plays in Puin + Hoop and the Void*.

Digilog is a project by Roald van Dillewijn. The main goal of this project is to use guitar pedals different than most users do, to create beautiful new sounds. To achieve this goal the guitarpedals are hacked. Every parameter is controllable by a computer.
