Zeno van den Broek is a Dutch-born, Copenhagen-based composer and artist. His work is focused on space, time and architecture. Zeno works in a multi-sensory way to research and express notions of spatial awareness. Van den Broek utilizes immaterial and temporal means such as sound, acoustics and projections to create site and concept specific works. This trans-disciplinary method has a strong conceptual foundation, which enables Zeno to comprehend and express the richness and complexity of spatiality.

The Shift Symm collection is a series of brutal, abstract audiovisual construction from Dutch-born, Copenhagen-based composer Zeno van den Broek. Raw, exposed electronic textures collide in oscillating patterns of drift. Van den Broek’s sculptural sonic architecture plays on rigorous shifts of compositional symmetry – with results that are both hypnotic and evocative.

Tijs Ham is a soundartist from the Netherlands. Next to his work for STEIM (The Studio for electro- Instrumental Music) he has an artistic practice that focusses on the musical expression of chaotic processes. After several residencies at BEK and many other institutions, Tijs will spend the first three months of 2017 working on the project ‘Refract / Recurse’, during a residency at USF Verftet.

Birk Nygaard is a renowned light and video artist in Norway. He develops visual designs for different expressions on stage – be it a concert, theatre or dance. He makes installations and initiates projects within art performance. His works have been displayed at Bergen Art Hall and by Raff Design and he has worked with festivals such as Ekko and Piksel on a number of occasions.

‘Refract / Recurse’ combines scattered laser projection and live electronics consisting of feedbacking analog mixers that generate expressive soundscapes. In order to form shapes in a laser projector, a tiny mirror is making rapid movements inside of the device. These mechanical movements make subtle sounds that are usually barely audible. By amplifying the tiny sounds and incorporating them into a live electronics setup, a unique audio-visual link starts to emerge. This direct connection forms the starting point of ‘Refract / Recurse’ The laserbeams are refracted, lighting up the space in a hypnotizing pulse while the music slowly builds up to an all encompassing sonic wave.
