Under hele festivalen vises lydinstallasjonen Dubtables av Roar Sletteland. Dubtables utforsker vinylmediets mest grunnleggende bestanddeler – den roterende skiven, armen, motoren, stiftens kontakt med rillene, forholdet mellom lyden og bevegelsen i et automatisert, uforutsigbart DJ-sett. Rillene er avtrykk av fortidens lydbølger som stiften omdanner til levende lyd i nåtiden. I en tid der musikk både i skapelse og avspilling ofte kun er digital, blir installasjonen en påminnelse om lydens fysiske utgangspunkt og dermed også om en kultur der denne materialiteten stod sentralt.

Platespilleren og vinylen var grunnleggende i de sosiokulturelle fenomenene som DJ- og klubbkulturen skapte da den oppstod. LP-platen var identitetsmarkør og dansen var etablert som sosial aktivitet. Prosjektet springer ut av danseforestillingen The Table Turns av Roar Sletteland og Karen Eide Bøen, der danserens bevegelser kontrollerer platespillernes oppførsel. Denne gangen er det publikum selv som interagerer med verket. Installasjonen kan oppleves under festivalen på kveldstid og på dagtid.

During this year’s entire Ekkofestival, the sound installation Dubtables by Roar Sletteland will be exhibited. Dubtables explores the vinyl’s most basic components – the rotating disc, the arm, the engine, the pin’s contact with the grooves, the relationship between the sound and the movement in an automated, unpredictable DJ set. The grooves are impressions of sound waves from the past, transformed into present sound. In a time when music, both in creation and playback, is often only digital, Dubtables is a reminder of sound’s physical starting point and thus about a culture where this materiality was central.

The record player and vinyl were fundamental in the socio-cultural phenomena that the DJ- and club culture created when it occurred. The LP record was an identity marker and dance was established as a social activity. The project is a developement from the dance performance The Table Turns by Roar Sletteland and Karen Eide Bøen, where the dancer’s movements controlled the behaviour of the record players. In this installation the audience interacts with the piece itself. The installation can be experienced during the festival in the evenings and during the daytime.
