The Living Theatre ble etablert I 1947 av julian beck(1925-1985) og Judith Malina. Dette legendariske New York baserte kompaniet ledes i dag av Brad Burgess og Thomas S. Walker.

Da Judith Malina gikk bort i 2015 etterlot hun seg manuskriptet «Venus & Mars» som Grusomhetens Teater uroppfører nå. Forbindelsen mellom de to kompanier har eksistert siden 2011, med utveksling av workshops og kunstneriske strategier.

En gjensidig tillit, som ikke minst skyldes den felles kontakt med tradisjonen fra teaterteoretikeren Antonin Artaud Antonin(1896-1948) har muliggjort denne uroppførelsen. Foruten veteranen Thomas Scott Walker medvirker på scenen 13 skuespillere fra Grusomhetens Teate

Hvordan kan de to kjønn møtes i en genuin forståelse som hinder verden å komme på avveie? I de naturreligiøse samfunn ble den androgyne skikkelse fremhevet og helliggjort.

Maleren Davids berømte bilde «Venus avvæpner Mars» er en sterk visjon. Det er Davids siste verk, hans siste budskap. Mannen som lar seg avvæpne. I bildets motiv synes Venus-skikkelsen å bruke en type sensuell list, men alvoret i foretagendet speiles i hennes ansikt.
Hva som behøves er en baklengsdans for mennesket som skal bli den rette vei fremover.

«The beautiful non-violent anarchistic revolution»

The Living Theatre was established by julian beck (1925-1985) and Judith Malina in 1947. This legendary New York based company is now led by the Co-Artistic Directors, Brad Burgess and Thomas S. Walker.

When Judith Malina passed away in 2015 she left behind the unfinished manuscript Venus and Mars, which Grusomhetens Teater is now going to premiere on the 14th December 2017. The bond between the two companies is forged since 2011, through exchanging workshops and artistic strategies. A mutual trust, that was created not least due to the common contact with the tradition of the theatrical theorist Antonin Artaud (1896-1948), has made this staging possible.

How can the two genders meet in a genuine understanding that prevents the world in becoming adrift? In the nature-religious societies the androgynous figure was highlighted and made holy.

The famous picture «Mars disarmed by Venus» by the painter David, is a strong vision. It is David’s last work, his last message. The man who lets himself be disarmed. In the motif of the picture the figure of Venus seems to use a type of sensual cunning, but the seriousness of the situation is mirrored in her face.
What is needed is a form of a backward dance for the humanity, that takes the right path forward.
