BETWEEN THE LINES

I kjølvannet av #MeToo-kampanjen har Kunstakademiet i Oslo etablert en arbeidsgruppe med fokus på å mobilisere interseksjonell solidaritet. Så langt har det ikke kommet noe samlet initiativ fra det norske billedkunstfeltet i forbindelse med dette historisk viktige øyeblikket. Som et beskjedent utgangspunkt for det vi håper vil bli en bredere bevegelse, lanserer vi derfor plakatprosjektet BETWEEN THE LINES.

BETWEEN THE LINES er en gruppeutstilling med bidrag fra over hundre kunstnere tilknyttet den norske kunstscenen. Blant bidragsyterne finnes både svært etablerte navn og unge kunststudenter. Bidragene er svar på en åpen invitasjon til å sende inn bidrag som tar sikte på bevisstgjøring rundt problematiske uttrykk for maktdynamikk som fortsatt eksisterer både i samfunnet og i kunstinstitusjonene. Sett samlet retter bidragene søkelyset på problemstillinger som sexisme, rasisme, homofobi og klassekonflikt, og søker dermed å inspirere og opplyse vårt felles ønske om endring.
Plakatene er alle trykket som risografier, i én farge og i samme format. Initiativet er inspirert av See Red Women’s Workshop som opererte i England fra begynnelsen av 70-tallet og fram til 1990. Gjennom produksjon og distribusjon av plakater med positive og sterke kvinnebilder, utfordret de sexismen i media og i samfunnet generelt.

BETWEEN THE LINES er ett av forhåpentligvis mange initiativer som vil diskutere og dokumentere historiene fra vår egen tid, og dermed fremme endring i retning av mer konstruktive og rettferdige modeller for makt distribusjon, både i det visuelle kunstfeltet, i mellommenneskelige relasjoner, og i samfunnet generelt.

BETWEEN THE LINES

The Academy of Fine Art in Oslo has initiated a temporary working group focused on mobilizing intersectional solidarity in the wake of the historical moment brought about by the #MeToo-campaign.
So far there has not been a joint manifestation for the field of visual art in Norway, and as a modest starting point for what we hope will be a broader movement, we are launching the poster project BETWEEN THE LINES.

BETWEEN THE LINES is a group exhibition with contributions by more than one hundred artists connected to the Norwegian art scene. A wide spectrum of very established artists to young art students have contributed to the project. The exhibition has come together as an open call process accepting all contributions invested in raising awareness of the problematic power dynamics still at play in society and its institutions. Together the works address structural issues related to sexism, racism, homophobia, and class conflicts and seek to inspire and enlighten our mutual pursuit of change.
The posters are printed on a risograph and the project is inspired by See Red Women’s Workshop operating in the UK from the early 70’s to 1990 with a focus on defying the sexist images of women and creating positive and strong alternatives.

BETWEEN THE LINES is one out of hopefully many initiatives that will discuss and take part in documenting the stories of our time, voicing change and imagine a more constructive and fair model of power distribution, both within the field of visual art, interpersonal relationships, and society at large.

Etter utstillingsperioden vil et utvalg av plakatene stilles ut forskjellige steder på KHiO, og slik integreres i institusjonens hverdagsliv.

Following the joint manifestation a selection of the posters will be exhibited at various locations at Oslo National Academy of the Arts in order to be integrated into the everyday life of the educational institution.
