Tusmørke

Active since 1994, Tusmørke (meaning ‘twilight’) is a five-piece band based in Oslo that are known for their catchy psychedelic progressive folk music and their slightly obscure humour. They have become a prolific band since the release of Underjordisk Tusmørke in 2012. They released two albums: Hinsides under the Finnish label Svart Records and Bydyra under the Norwegian label Karisma Records in the same year of 2017. After receiving critical acclaim for their children’s album Bydyra, they are following up the success with a new album Fjernsyn i Farver in May this year.

Taking inspiration from traditional folk music, Tusmørke likes to write about mythical matters and ancient times content-wise, ranging from the Black Death to the bronze age. Their critical album Bydyra took a step further, making mesmerising music with children for both children and adults, singing about the adventures of migrant animals that were forced to move to the city from their tree house in nature. This is an allegorical tale of the bizarre world that we are currently living in, infused with playful proggy and folky music elements making you smile and wiggle your body. It’s one of the outstanding Norwegian albums of 2017 handpicked by us in the Music Issue of Oh Oslo.

Piim

Piim is an avant-garde jazz duo consisting of Bjørn Thevik on synthesizer, live looping and Stig Rennestraum on drums. Both trained as jazz musicians at NTNU, they have played in different jazz bands and projects, including their other group Dinosau together with Lena Nymark. As a little-known group, they performed at Kafé Hærverk in August last year and their performance ”totally floored” Vegard and Petter, the team behind Kafé Hærverk. In the interview in Oh Oslo, Vegard and Petter claimed that it was the one of the best gigs they have seen in many years. In a nut shell, to understand the brilliance of this low-profile yet brilliant duo you must see them performaning live yourself.

Cold Mailman Duo(Ivar Bowitz & Catharina Sletner)

Originally hailing from Bodø, the north of Norway, Ivar Bowitz formed Cold Mailman when he moved to Oslo in the late noughties. A cold, subdued, melancholic indie band, Cold Mailman has released four albums to date, evolving from guitar indie music to music with fuller, richer arrangements. Probably best known for their brilliant music videos, especially Time is of the Essence directed by André Chocron, where you can see the ”light shows” of council estates on the outskirts of Oslo, Cold Mailman have managed to connote strong Oslo quality in both their music and visuals. This is the reason we feature a story of Cold Mailman in our magazine and invited Ivar Bowitz as Cold Mailman solo to play at our launch.

LEIF – DJ set

Leif started his music career as the synth pop band Leif and the Future and they released their debut album Songs of Youth in 2011. Between 2015 and 2016 Leif became a solo act, releasing a string of dance/electronic pop singles, including Boys Who Want Love and Breakdown & Burnout. Around the same time Leif started a popular instagram account Scandinavian Melancholy that shares visually dazzling arty collages juxtaposing beautiful nude men and pulsating Scandinavian landscapes. On 6 April he will finally drop his long-awaited debut solo album Scandinavian Melancholy, which is co-produced by Korallreven (Daniel Tjäder from The Radio Dept.). To understand what’s behind Scandinavian melancholy, we did an Oslo tour with Leif in our magazine, and he will give us a taste of it at our launch by playing some of his favourite tunes as a DJ.
