Hvordan brukes kroppsutsmykning til å uttrykke eller undergrave kjønnsidentitet? Hvilke etiske problemer møter man når man samler og formidler personlige historier av sensitiv karakter? Hvilke nye metoder innenfor formidling kan kommuniserer denne typen komplisert forskningsmateriale på en effektiv måte?

Gjennom residensoppholdet, Adornment and Gender: Engaging Conversation, har elleve lokale og internasjonale aktører med tverrfaglige bakgrunner (innen mote, smykkedesign, antropologi, performance, fotografering og informasjonssamling) arbeidet sammen med hypotesen om at kroppsutsmykning kan være et middel som enten styrke eller utfordre kjønnsstatus quo. Gruppen har gjennom oppholdet tatt et dypdykk i temaet, samlet sin nåværende forskning og relaterte spørsmål forbundet med formidling av sensitivt forskningsmateriale. Symposiet åpner opp og inviterer publikum til videre diskusjon av temaet og de ulike spørsmål rundt tilgjengelige metoder innenfor formidling av personlige historier og vitnesbyrd.

Dette heldagssymposiet ser nærmere på rollen til smykker, mote, kroppsmodifikasjoner og andre kroppsutsmykninger i uttrykk for kjønnsidentiteter med fokus på tre hovedområder: (i) deling og diskusjon av eksisterende forskning, (ii) diskutere hensiktsmessige metoder for formidling av sensitive materiale og (iii) utforske etikken som omgir samling, deling formidling av denne type forskning.

Dagens oppstilling inkluderer:

• Kunstner, psykolog og forfatter Mah Rana (UK) vil presenterer sitt pågående forskningsprosjekt, Meanings and Attachments (2002 – nåtid), en verdensomspennende serie om hvorfor mennesker bruker smykker og hvilke forhold de har til de gjennom arkivering, tekst, lyd, portrettfotografi og film. Ranas praksis fokuserer på menneskelige relasjoner, fortellinger og eksperimentelle prosesser.

• Loraine Furter (CH) og Sarah Magnan (FR) jobber ofte sammen som designere og forskere. Sammen vil de snakke om måter å revurdere formuleringen mellom digitale og print versjoner. De vil også gå nærmere inn på spørsmål om digitalt bruk.

• Paneldiskusjon med Natalie Hope O’Donnel (Kurator – Munchmuseet i bevegelse, Styreleder – Norsk kuratorforening), Sille Storihle (kunstner, Medgrunnlegger av FRANK), and Ane Lan (Eivind Reierstad) (kunstner). Panelet skal diskutere etikken rundt det å lage / dele / formidle samtalemateriale fra risikofylte eller marginaliserte grupper i samfunnet. Når er det OK å ha begrensede tilgangen til forskningsmaterialet? Når kommer problemstillinger rundt utnyttelse og voyeurisme i konflikt med idealer om sosial deltakelse?

• Panel diskusjon 2: deltagerne ved residencyoppholdet vil identifisere nøkkelspørsmål som har oppstått gjennom deres kollektive forskning og daglige aktiviteter. Diskusjonen vil deretter bli åpne opp for publikum for en bredere debatt.

How is adornment used to express or subvert gender identities? What ethical issues need sensitive handling in collecting and sharing personal stories? Which emerging methods of dissemination most effectively communicate such complex research?

Through the residency, Adornment and Gender: Engaging Conversation, eleven local and international residents – coming from the fields of fashion, contemporary jewellery, anthropology, performance, photography and data gathering – are working together on the hypothesis that adornment is a means to endorse and challenge the gender status quo. They are interested by the fact that this ongoing negotiation finds complex, simultaneous and incompatible expressions in craft and life. Having pooled their current research and questions, the group are keen to spend a day with you discussing the methods available today to make sensitive, personal testimonies public.

This one-day symposium looks at the role of jewellery, fashion, bod-mods and other body adornment in the expression of gendered identities with a focus on 3 main areas: (i) sharing and discussing existing research, (ii) considering appropriate methods of dissemination of sensitive, personal material and (iii) exploring the ethics that surround gathering and sharing sensitive or personal information.

The lineup for the day includes:

Artist, psychologist, and writer Mah Rana (UK) will present her project, Meanings and Attachments (2002 – ongoing), a worldwide series of public-participation events archiving ‘jewellery’ stories through text, audio, portrait photography and film. Rana’s practice centres around human relationships, narratives, material and experiential processes.

Loraine Furter (CH) and Sarah Magnan (FR) often work together in their practices as designers and researchers. The two will talk about ways to rethink the articulation between online and in-print, and questions of online usership.

A panel including Natalie Hope O’Donnel (Curator – Munch Museum on the Move, Chair of the board – The Norwegian Association of Curators), Sille Storhile (Artist, Co-founder of FRANK), and Ane Lan (Eivind Reierstad) (Artist) will debate the ethics of making / sharing / transmitting conversations with at-risk or marginalized communities. When is it OK to have restricted access conversations? How do issues of exploitation and voyeurism conflict with ideals of social participation?

Residents from Adornment and Gender: Engaging Conversation will identify key questions that have arisen from their collective activity, continuing and opening the discussion with the audience.
