Cancamon is built upon four songs – Zabelle Panosian’s «Groung», «There is a Balm in Gilead» and «Blasé» by Jeanne Lee and Archie Shepp and «Something’s Coming» by Jeanne Lee and Ran Blake. Each of these songs were chosen for their particular affective hold over the artist, their capacity to perpetually ‘work’ upon her body both in soothing, absorbing and intensive ways.

Throughout the work she holds these samples within her body, using taut movements and vocality to feel through notions of the word ‘balm’ and how it might relate to the female singing voice. Within this particular attention is paid to the communication of the singing voice and its capacity to entice beyond comfortable listening. In her description of the performance, a cry is characterised as ‘somewhere between a moan, a dampened scream, an old dial up tone and the sound of a whistling kettle’.

Cancamon is elusive yet exacting, but mainly, deeply personal. The locations where the video work was shot are revisited Stockholm grounds where Jeanne Lee both performed and recorded – The Golden Circle, part of ABF (Workers Educational Association), and Borgarskolan, now Sollévi,-huset, a health and treatment centre. The choice of these spaces reflect Tolmie’s own mission to place herself meticulously within the context of the sounds she both listens to and performs.

Tolmie works from within the intersections of performance, music and moving image. Her works probe the site-specific conditions of performance-making by finding ways to vocalise and place her body that access the political and poetic capabilities of physical, written and musical languages. Collective practice is an intrinsic component of Tolmie’s ongoing work. She collaborates regularly as ULAPAARC with Paul Abbott; with artists Kimberley O’Neill / France-Lise McGurn; as a quartet with Will Holder / Paul Abbott / Seymour Wright; on collective vocal group DRANG with Mia Edelgart, Deirdre Humphreys, Katrine Gjerding and Anna Waerum. Tolmie has also contributed to many other collective endeavours in facilitating events, pedagogic and expanded research practices. She is part of the editorial collective for Cesura//Acesso, a journal for music, poetics and experimental politics and is currently undertaking two funded research projects at Kungliga Konsthögskolan in Stockholm – Gender of Sound with Susanna Jablonski and The Glossary of the Event with Frida Sandström and Aleksei Borisionok. She was selected to be part of Mejan Residents at Kungliga Konsthögskolan in Stockholm 2015-16 and LUX Associate Artists Programme 2009-10. She is a recipient of the Paul Hamlyn Award 2016-19.
