Buddhas Enlightenment Day: Fasting Retreat

[Bilde]

15th April is Buddha’s Enlightenment Day. Every year, thousands of people throughout the world come to their local meditation centres to celebrate this event by engaging in a two day fasting purification practice. In the morning we take the Eight Mahayana Precepts and engage in the practice known as Drop of Essential Nectar in which we make physical prostrations and chanted requests to 1,000 Armed Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Universal Compassion. By doing this we purify our negative karma and empower our body and mind.

Each day begins with taking the precepts at 06.45. When we take the precepts we promise to abstain for 24 hours from negative actions of body, speech and mind and to eat just one meal before 1pm. The second day can be taken like the first day or we totally abstain from any food and any drink for 24 hours. There will be three 1 1/2 hour sessions each day. You can only attend the sessions if you have taken the precepts the same morning at 06.45
