Home Planet: Unfamiliar Construction

[Bilde]

Convention is the greatest limit to architecture: clients have notions about what architecture is; contractors have notions about how things go together; architects have notions about how things should look.

The Isonians are not burdened with such preconceptions about how earthly materials can be used for construction and instead have the ability to see the potential of various materials and techniques with fresh eyes. Unfamiliar Construction is an installation in which Isonians purposefully misuse common earthly building materials in order to challenge the People of the Earth’s perception about how architecture should behave. In this project, the scenario of foreigner versus native is mined for architectural potential, asserting the value of the alien, immigrant perspective in a time when such value is frequently questioned and undermined within global political discourse.

Unfamiliar Construction takes place during the performance and living installation Home Planet, providing a scheduled meeting between the People of Earth and the travellers from the planet of Isona. The travellers from Isona are played by a group of people who are participating in the full performance, living in a building in the centre of Oslo four days in October, exploring the city and culture of Oslo. Buying a ticket for the chamber event Unfamiliar Construction will also give you the opportunity to visit the Isonian’s base location.

Participation does not require any preparation, and you will learn everything you need to know in order to participate after arriving on the location. You don’t have to perform in front of an audience, but you (and other participants) are an integral part of the chamber event and will be asked to embody yourself, a person from the Earth.
