Oslo World: Contemporary art in China - from a feminist & queer perspective

Welcome to a CONVERSATION between Shi Tou (China) and Elisabeth L. Engebretsen (Norway) on THURSDAY 31 October from 18.00 to 19.00 during OSLO WORLD and the exhibition Qui Vive! Part II.

China generally experiences a setback in gender equality, and the country is ranked # 103 of 149 countries in The Global Gender Gap Report 2018. Female artists were invisible in Beijing’s art market and galleries in the 1990’s, and it was challenging for women to establish themselves as contemporary artists. Shi Tou succeeded – maybe against all odds – in becoming a recognized artist during this period. Does the newer generation of female and queer artists have a better starting point and other possibilities today? Is it room for politically active artists and visual activists in 2019, 30 years after the protests and the dream of democracy were violently stopped at Tiananmen Square in Beijing? These questions and Shi Tou’s art will form the backdrop for a conversation between Shi Tou and Elisabeth L. Engebretsen at Kunstplass.
Engebretsen is an Associate Professor at the University of Stavanger (UiS) with expertise in queer, theory, gender issues and contemporary China.

Kunstplass is for the second year in a row collaborating with Oslo World Music Festival. The two internationally renowned artists Shi Tou (China) and Berni Searle (South Africa) are this year’s Oslo World’s festival artists at Kunstplass. Shi Tou will also exhibit a large satirical picture ”Breathe” at Kulturhuset from Tuesday 29 October.
