Els Viaene: Ways of seeing sound

What is sound? What is this phenomenon we can’t usually see or touch, and how can we get closer to it?

The Belgian sound artist Els Viaene’s research investigates sound at its source; the moment it is shaped. In Ways of seeing sound, she approaches sound as a physical phenomenon and their various visual manifestations, brings her to other worlds and times. This exhibition for Lydgalleriet is a performance and installation where science, sound and sculpture meet, blurring the notions of seeing and hearing, the perception of what we see and hear and how it is interfered with each other.

Els Viaene started her work as a sound artist and field recordist in 2001. With a set-up of two small microphones she listens, zooms into and enlarges the aural landscapes surrounding us. The natural rhythms and textures of the sounds hidden in those landscapes form the basis of her work. Working on these sound materials for performances, sound compositions or installations she makes the listeners travel in imaginary and organic environments. Through the specific use and set-up of sound within a space her installations create new spaces within existing ones, either emphasising or making disappear the physical borders of that space.

Ways of seeing sound is part of Oscillations: Exercises in resilience, an international exchange program exploring the tension between acoustic and visual art forms from a makers perspective. The program aims to facilitate the circulation of artists working with sound across national and disciplinary boundaries as well as to foster knowledge exchange between artist-run spaces.

Concept and realisation: Els Viaene, technical assistance: Koen Daems, video electronics: Elias Heuninck, light design: Simon Siegmann, consultant (Standing waves): Johan Vandermaelen. Thanks to Ghent University Museum and Roland Carchon, Danny Van de Steene and Dirk Eeckhaut.
