Jubileumsseminar for Senter for tverrfaglig kjønnsforskning

Centre for Gender Research welcomes you to an all-day celebration of our 25th anniversary!

Professor of philosophy at Hunter College of the City, University of New York, Linda Alcoff, opens the day. Alcoff will be conferred an honorary doctorate at the University of Oslo on September 1st, and on this occasion she will give a public lecture.

A panel debate will follow and afterwards, from about 4 pm, all are invited to attend a reception where comedian and author Shabana Rehman will do her standup show, and there will be served refreshments.

PANEL DISCUSSION: Whence and Whither: Norwegian gender studies in a transnational age

The panel will bring together speakers from some of STK’s partner institutions to discuss challenges for gender studies today. Norway alternates with some other Nordic countries to top the UN rankings of Gender Equality and “women-friendliness”. This means on the one hand that Norwegian gender research has rather interesting data to do research on – on the other hand it puts Norwegian gender research in a different relation to power than gender studies in many other countries. What are seen as important challenges for gender research varies considerably between different locations. The panelists are invited to reflect on this fact and the following questions from their respective geographic and academic contexts:

  • What are seen as important challenges for gender research in your context?
  • How do these tie in with transnational agendas and trends in gender research?
  • What is the most fruitful way of negotiating the relationship between local and global/transnational perspectives in gender research?
  • How to become better integrated without giving up the specific insights that only situated research can produce?

Panellists:

  • Professor Linda Alcoff, Hunter College of the City, University of New York
  • Dr. Beata Kowalska, Jagiellonian University, Krakow
  • Dr. Christel Stormhøj, Roskilde University, Denmark
  • Professor Sigridur Thorgeirsdottir, Islands Universitetet, Iceland
  • Professor Unni Langås, Universitetet i Agder, Norway

Moderator: Anne Bitsch, Ph.d research fellow, Centre for Gender Research, University of Oslo
