Prof. Salwa Ismail visits Norway

Salwa Ismail, Professor of Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, U.K. is a leading international scholar on Islamism in the contemporary Middle East.
She is the author of two acclaimed books, Rethinking Islamist Politics: Culture, the State and Islamism (I. B. Tauris 2003), and Political Life in Cairo’s New Quarters: Encountering the Everyday State (Universityof Minnesota Press 2006), and is currently writing a book on violence and memory in contemporary Syria.
Ismail has, for a number of years, studied and published extensively on political and social life in her native Egypt and in Syria.

Followed by panel debate chaired by Kai Kverme from the Center for Islamic and Middle East Studies at the University of Oslo, with panelists: Salwa Ismail, Professor at SOAS, Hanan Albakhe, member of the Syrian National Council (SNC) and opposition activist from Syria, and Sofia Amara, journalist and documentary filmmaker.
