Following the economic crack of 2008 which nearly devastated Iceland, performance artist Erna Einarsdóttir relocated to Oslo, as part of the new wave of Icelanders seeking new opportunities in Norway. Within a few years, many more were to follow in her path, opting to settle down in the capital city in the nordic land of oil and financial stability. Photographer Jói Kjartansson and his partner-in-crime and life, artist Hildur Hermanns were amongst those many hundreds who migrated in 2011.

At first, life in Oslo seemed like a dream, or a “strange holiday of sorts,” at least according to Hildur Hermanns. The protective bubble surrounding the Norwegian way of life seemed all too similar to the trio, as they eventually began to reflect on the previous similar lifestyles in pre-2008 Icelandic consumerism and materialism.

When the trio of artists first sat down in ‘Løkka’ to discuss ideas with curating gallery owner (and enthusiastic fan of Iceland) Mark Steiner to put the exhibition together, it quickly became apparent that their ideas were on the same wavelength. The red thread throughout the exhibition is the artists’ view of their current surroundings and the environment they live in. They all cannot help but observe how people can lose themselves in extremes in all directions.

People often only fill their lives by doing things twhich seem to fit into a pre-made frame of some sort. Society tells us to be like this and do that and so on, and as human beings we are expected to interpret these boundaries, so we can become a part of it. As the three artists are themselves foreigners in a foreign land, they automatically compare the behavioral pattern of the society they were born into with to the one they now live.

“Is society always right, or is it we who misunderstand?” they ask. ”What is truly right and what is wrong? Can one avoid being influenced? If one chooses go your own path, is this being brave or honest to oneself?”

How long have these Icelandic artists been living now in Oslo?
Jói – 1 year in September
Hildur – 1 year in July
Erna – 3 years in August

The concept behind the poster, according to the artists themselves: “It just wasn’t possible to do it any other way than this visually. The flag colours of the two countries, Iceland and Norway are the same: red, white and blue. We are nude because in that way we are being as neutral as possible. You can’t see what we wear and so perhaps it is more difficult to put us into that pre-made frame, since clothing isn’t simply to keep us warm these days.”

The name ”you’reavision” describes the concept of the exhibition well, and of course it also connects to a joint interest of the two nations with a little humourous wordplay.

Foreign press have already been showing the exhibition a great deal of interest, and there is excitement in the air surrounding the opening, which will feature a special screening and a mind-blowing piece of performance art.
