This time we are going to show:

1) All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace – Episode 1

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace is a 2011 BBC documentary
series by film maker Adam Curtis. The series argues that computers have
failed to liberate humanity and instead have “distorted and simplified
our view of the world around us”.

In the first episode, Curtis tracks the effects of Ayn Rand’s ideas on
American financial markets, particularly via the influence on Alan
Greenspan. The Californian Ideology, a techno-utopian belief that
computer networks could measure, control and self-stabilise societies,
without hierarchical political control, and that people could become
‘Randian heroes’, only working for their own happiness, became
widespread in Silicon Valley. Things did not really turned out that way
in the end…

2) Space Tourists

The film accompanies the first female space traveler who was not a space
agency employee, Anousheh Ansari, who paid US $20 million for her flight
into space. On the other side the poor Kazakh metal collectors search
for rocket waste that fall literally from heaven. Both risk their lives
for a dream…

3) High Tech Soul

High Tech Soul is the first documentary to tackle the deep roots of
techno music alongside the cultural history of Detroit, its birthplace.
From the race riots of 1967 to the underground party scene of the late
1980s, Detroit’s economic downturn didn’t stop the invention of a new
kind of music that brought international attention to its producers and
their hometown. Featuring in-depth interviews with many of the world’s
best exponents of the artform, High Tech Soul focuses on the creators of
the genre — Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson — and looks
at the relationships and personal struggles behind the music. Artists
like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Eddie Fowlkes and a host of
others explain why techno, with its abrasive tones and resonating
basslines, could not have come from anywhere but Detroit.
