Monday Lectures - Jonas Vansteenkiste: "Form follows Fiction"

Monday Lectures at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen is pleased to invite you all to the public lecture by artist Jonas Vansteenkiste. This lecture is presented in collaboration with the artist run space Galleri Kronborg, where Vansteenkiste is presenting his exhibition “Fractum Domum” from April 6–27.

The works of Jonas Vansteenkiste are defined by spaces. He is a visual artist and curator who investigates the field of tension between architectural spaces and the psychological impact of space. He has a broad visual language that ranges from installation, sculpture, video to drawing. In addition to his individual work, Vansteenkiste has a duo practice with artist Veerle Michiels where they develop site-specific installations and investigate how brittle history & memory can be. Vansteenkiste is the founder of The Wrong House, an artist-run initiative that offers a platform for presentation and reflection with a focus on interdisciplinary art forms and present-day subjects. It is an art space, curator platform, coaching hub and workshop space located in Kortrijk, Belgium.

Vansteenkiste has a master’s degree in Media Art from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent (KASK) and a master’s degree in Research in Art and Design at St. Lucas in Antwerp. Recent projects and residencies include Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, ZK/U Berlin, and EKWC in The Netherlands, where he developed an additional visual language by working with ceramics which he incorporates into his installations. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in multiple exhibitions.

At Galleri Kronborg Vansteenkiste, presents the work “Fractum Domum”. Fractum Domum means broken house. For Vansteenkiste this refers to a personal story and the relationship with his biological father. He uses architectural ornament as a motif. The use of typical 19th century ornamentation is not arbitrary; it refers to the use of floral motifs and bridges the gap to the content. The intervention creates the illusion of nature reclaiming culture. Reclaiming a place in the world is, of course, a complex, multifaceted process. Reclaiming a place is for Vansteenkiste also the personal motive in this work. Galleri Kronborg will be the 8th location for this intervention.

Galleri Kronborg is an artist-driven, non-profit exhibition platform. Through a collaboration with Bergen Municipality, the project disposes of the ruins from the former mountain hut, Kronborg, on Rundemanen, one of the mountains surrounding Bergen. Galleri Kronborg has focused on creating a platform for conceptual and process oriented works in an untraditional setting. The annual program showcases experimental, site-specific and explorative works from international and local artists, offering visitors an encounter with contemporary art outside the traditional white-cubed framework.
