Valerie Hardcastle: "Liberalism and Obesity: When Should Society Intervene?"

This presentation addresses how neuroscientific evidence interacts with our views of a liberal society by looking at the specific example of obesity. Does obesity cause a social harm such that society is justified in intervening? If so, what might that intervention look like? Are the morbidly obese addicted to food? If so, then does that change how society should interact with the obese? Do the proposed interventions match what we actually know to be true about obesity? In answering these questions, the presentation argues that the scientific evidence belies liberalism itself.
