The World Bank and the IMF: have they reformed and can they be trusted?

Dette er spørsmål som stilles under Eurodads årskonferanse. Du er invitert til den åpne delen av konferansen: kl. 9-11. Seminaret går på engelsk.

Key questions: From the point of view of the governments of Ecuador and Norway, have real reforms taken place in the World Bank and IMF? How do governments view the prospects of ensuring that these institutions are now serious about poverty reduction, are no longer ideological or intrusive in their policy demands, and are responsive to governments beyond the G7? How do these governments view their responsibilities as creditors or borrowers? Which reforms are still needed and how could new alternative institutions such as The Bank of the South respond to the challenges mentioned?

Chair: Alex Wilks, Eurodad Coordinator

Key speakers:

  • Torbjørn Urfjell, Political advisor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway (20 mins)
  • Ricardo Patiño, President of Ecuadors Debt Audit Commission and Minister for the Coast (20 mins)
  • Daniela Setton, WEED and Eurodad board member

The seminar is an open part of Eurodad’s Annual Conference and gathers over 100 participants from all over the world working on structural issues like debt, conditionality and aid.

The theme for this years conference is: Limiting the roles of the World Bank and the IMF: towards alternative institutions for channelling finance. Eurodad is a network of 53 non-governmental organisations from 16 European countries working on issues like debt, development finance and poverty reduction.
