Peacemaking in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
The Middle East peace process may be described as a “roller coaster”. It contained a significant number of agreements between the parties. At the same time, the process was punctuated by constant deadlocks and it finally collapsed after the outbreak of the al-Aqsa intifada. The lecture will focus on a number of barriers that the Middle East peace process exposed and what lessons may be drawn from this case: (1) The importance of recognition and the problem of ontological insecurity, (2) Persistence of violence and the problem of managing spoilers, (3) International engagement and the problem of status quo negotiation, (4) “New Middle East” and the problem with the liberal peace thesis.

Karin Aggestam is an associate professor in Political Science and director of Peace and Conflict Studies at Lund University. Her primary areas of research are war, diplomacy and conflict resolution in the Middle East. She is also coordinating a large EU-project on Just and Durable Peace in the Middle East and Western Balkans.
