ELEKTRODIESEL (saksa fra synesthetic recordings)
elektrodiesel is is a musical project which started as a concept in 1994, when Norwegian musician Espen Jensen wanted to create a musical improvisation ensemble/collective and break away from the restrictions he’d experienced with previous musical collaborations.

The basic concept is that anything goes, and to always bear in mind the name elektrodiesel, which suggest the coming together of the organic and the electric to create energy. There are no restrictions on style, instrumentation or number of players, the only parameters being that the collaborators must be willing to let go, improvise and experiment at all times.

Espen Jensen teamed up with his friend Kjetil D. Brandsdal (Noxagt, Fibo-Trespo, Hellfire, Kjertl Del Brondo Group, Drid, etc.) in 1996 and released the album Org. on vinyl; three tracks, 45 minutes of ambient, disco-beat, organ-noise, and manipulated hydraulic pumps.

Then Espen moved to London, and started a new collaboration with fellow art student Kristen Rønnevik, who brought a whole new perspective on things into the equation. They started using visuals, and things took yet another turn. Kristen and Espen still occasionally work together as elektrodiesel.

During the summer of 1999 a new working relationship was struck up to further broaden elektrodiesel’s field of play. Espen started playing with some Norwegian experimental musicians (düplo, Marakel) which resulted in 8 tracks (2 hours 38 minutes) recorded live, all improvised, all real – unmixed and unpolished. Two of the tracks can be found on the LP The Summer Sessions In D# [Let’s Stay Together], released by Synesthetic Recordings in 2001.

The various constellations of elektrodiesel (with Espen as the only constant factor) has so far produced music that ranges from the monotonous drone of Org., via the improvised prog-rock of The Summer Sessions in D# and all-out-noise of “highrise, lowlife” and “low-frequency-strobe-assisted-object-shifter”, to the brittle “Concerto for Bontempi & El-guitar”.

Another project to come under the elektrodiesel banner was the installation Ladies & Gentlemen, a site-specific installation in a disused public toilet in Hull. The soundtrack for it, “Duet for Feedback and Flute”, got picked up by Norwegian web-based “record-company/art gallery” Ballongmagasinet, and was released on their site during April, 2000.
