Nobody Knows – Graeme Leak
Graeme Leak is a prominent figure in Australian music. He is renowned as a highly creative percussionist, composer, performance artist, educator, author and musical director. He has tutored percussion at most of the major music institutes in Australia. Leak has initiated some incredible large scale projects including a composition for electric fence (2003) in outback Queensland and The Incredible Hulls – A Wing Ding For Water Craft for 100 boats docked at Hobart harbour (2005).Many of Leak’s solo compositions and projects go beyond the ‘normal’ demands of a classically trained musician.
Nobody knows is written for melodica and marimba The melodica sits upon the marimba and the performer plays both instruments at one. This piece is short and sweet and could be described as reminiscent of an eastern European folk song.

And Now for the News … – Graeme Leak
This piece is written for a multiple percussion setup and a pre-recorded tape. The tape consists of excerpts from a Vietnamese radio program set against a constant pulse. Leak transcribed the rhythm and contour of the speech and the performer is free to do what she wants with this. In the score Leak suggests that the drums can mimic the speech on the recording or be independent of the tape.

I Love Jazz – Graeme Leak
text Frankie Lee
This is theatrical piece where the performer tells a story whilst playing marimba. The performer is a somewhat desperate man, trying to ‘hit it off’ with a woman. Leak came up with the concept for this work and asked Sydney-based band manager Frankie Lee to write the script. She collected parts of this story by observing and listening to actual conversations.

Beat Generation in the Californian Coastal Ranges – Warren Burt
Although born the United States, Warren Burt has spent most of his professional life in Australia . He has worked extensively with film, electronics, dance and theatre. This piece was written in California during a period Burt was a Resident Artist at Djerassi Ranch, a project funded by the Australia Council. Burt explores sound and the interference of sine waves on the vibraphone. A speaker is placed close to the vibraphone and as each note or chord rings it is effected by the tape part. The result is the creation of so called ‘beats’ which occur when two notes, which are almost the same pitch, are played together. The electronic part the acoustic part blend to form one sound and the listener should not be able to distinguish which is which.

Mutant Theatre – Anthony Pateras
Anthhony Pateras is a young and exciting composer on the Australian scene. His exploration of sound, texture and rhythm is unique. Pateras performs extensively throughout Europe and Australasia , primarily in trio format (Pateras playing prepared piano). Mutant Theatre is Pateras’ first solo percussion piece. It was commissioned by Australian percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson whom the composer thanks for ‘encouraging insanity’. It is a complex piece for various percussion instruments, plant pots, bottles, light bulbs, radios, toys and cheap electronics. This energetic piece is both theatrical (as the title suggests) but is also fascinating from a purely aural perspective.
