Symposium: Theories of Patriarchy and Structural Gender Theories – Nordic and Southeast European perspectives.

TID: Mandag 2. juni, kl. 1015-1800
STED: Undervisningsrom 1, Georg Sverdrups hus, Blindern

Theories of patriarchy have been criticised for being partial, grand, static without agents etc. We do not believe that these are necessary characteristics. On the contrary, we see possibilities to better understand phenomena like the development of family systems and why universalistic modernity has not implied abolition of particularistic gender subordination.

By contrasting North and South we point to the importance of a broad European relevance and usefulness now and in the future. There are apparent differences between these parts of Europe, both empirically and in theoretical approaches. Whereas family based patriarchy or figurative patriarchy is more visible in the Balkans, in the North the problem remains as to how to break down structural barriers for gender equality after more than thirty years of gender equality policies.

This symposium aims towards communication and learning across a pluralism of theoretical positions, not to maintain rigidly to one’s own preferred position. Many versions of patriarchy and structural theories exist. Today, there is a need to reassess these approaches and gain more systematic knowledge.

At the symposium we envision 20 – 30 participants. With speakers from the Nordic region and from/with experiences from Southeast Europe we want to discuss different structural gender theories including theories of patriarchy with focus on how these different positions may be useful in empirical work.
