From the Nixon Doctrine to the Carter Doctrine: The Geopolitics of Oil in the 1970s

Sakse:

Dear friends and colleagues,

We invite you to a seminar with Professor DAVID S. PAINTER at the Norwegian Nobel Institute, Thursday, March 13, at 2:15 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. His topic will be:

“From the Nixon Doctrine to the Carter Doctrine: The Geopolitics of Oil in the 1970s.”

The 1970s were a pivotal decade both in the Cold War and in the evolution of the world oil economy. Surprisingly, most studies of the rise and fall of détente neglect oil, and most studies of the oil crises of the 1970s neglect the larger strategic context. In this paper, Professor Painter seeks to gain new insights into both topics by examining their interaction.

David S. Painter teaches international history at Georgetown University where he has a joint appointment with the Department of History and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. His publications include Oil and the American Century: The Political Economy of US Foreign Oil Policy, 1941-1954; Origins of the Cold War: An International History (co-editor); The Cold War: An International History; articles on the Cold War, oil and foreign policy, and US policy toward the Third World; and an audio book, Cold War: On the Brink of Apocalypse.
