A classic of Norwegian modernist cinema
Erik Løchen is the greatest Norwegian film modernist, even though he only made two feature films – The Hunt from 1959, and this from 1972. Løchen has said that the six film reels of Remonstrance can be screened in any sequence, adding up to a total of 125 potential films. Løchen thereby demonstrated a contempt for classical, chronological storytelling.
Remonstrance is about a team making a film about political assassinations and secret political alliances in Norway. We get to see scenes from the film within the film, and we also follow a love story between two of the actors. Soon, the different levels of storytelling are intertwined.
