in-habit-ance

A New work by Lilith’ s Appetite

Inhabitance, rather than being simple dwelling in space, is a dynamic action constantly performed in each instance anew. Over the time inhabitance acquires us certain rights, opens up certain already trodden paths and gives us a footing in life. However as one path is chosen, others may be excluded.

Yet there are times when we face a junction and are not sure which way to go. Or perhaps we wish to try a new path but are not sure how to go about it. In these moments what we hold true and dear to ourselves is questioned. This can be an experience of disorientation where all seems to stand still, as if somehow suspended in mid-air not knowing how to fall.

The work is inspired by writings of Sara Ahmed as she investigates what it means to inhabit a space, to be extended and shaped by that space. Throughout the process the performers have explored the action of inhabitance as an effort of arranging oneself in a certain way. The work centers around the question what it means to be stuck in a pattern or to be stopped in ones tracks. What follows is an exploration of the difficulties in straying from ones path that often results in awkwardness of not fitting in.
