IN CASE OF... OFKS GALLERI SEPARATUTSTILLING AV KATHARINA BARBOSA BLAD

IN CASE OF FIRE

People I know, in their own home, surrounded by their things. They hold an object, the one they would save in case of fire. This should be of sentimental value, not something expensive, definitively not a computer. Not a child or a pet. I would want to hear the story of the object. How do we live? How do we decorate our homes? The objects in our lives, all of them tell a story, simple or intricate, about whom we are. I wanted to hear the story we didn’t want forget, as if the object represented the memory and the memory would vanish if the object did. The chosen object, the one in the models hands, will be safe, saved by the person choosing it. Everything else will turn to ashes. That’s why three other objects that are dear to the model, are placed within the frame, things that almost were elected to be saved, but didn’t make it. An antique shop is full of things that have been left by somebody, once most of them were loved and cherished. I’m a very curious person. The kind that always looks inside people’s windows, while strolling in front of an illuminated house with the curtains slightly open. The framing of each photo came naturally, as if someone didn’t walk by, but stopped outside and kept on looking in. The people in these photos are artists. Not too well known or popular, not too familiar with being photographed. They are wearing their normal clothes. They have no make-up. They look as they would, if a fire were to break out right now. Fire in our Scandinavian society is the worst that can happen. In other parts of the world much worse things are expected or seen as normal. Here in Norway it is forbidden by law to take something with you when your house burns. You should save your own life and nothing else.
