Samfunnets programslipp - The Voice of the Voiceless

Marking the release of this spring’s programme, The Student Society welcomes you to a presentation by the award-winning Palestinian journalist Mohammed Omer.

Omer was born and raised in the Rafah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip near the Egyptian border. The oldest of eight children, he began working to support his family at age six. At eighteen, Omer began his work as a journalist, reporting from Gaza.

Since then he has worked as a correspondent for numerous international newspapers and magazines. Among these are Morgenbladet and Ny Tid. In November 2009 he received the Norwegian PEN’s Ossietzky-prize, given to writers who have accomplished «outstanding achievements within the field of freedom of expression».

As one of few journalists present in Gaza, Omer will give us first-hand accounts of how border restrictions, military sieges and economic sanctions affect the lives of ordinary Gazans. Furthermore, he will discuss how civilians are coping without basic services such as electricity, water and adequate health care.

After the talk, there will be musical performances by members of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, local singer/songwriter Vilde Tuv, jazz musicians from The University of Bergen’s Grieg Academy and funk/soul artist Myrna Braza and her band.
