By:Larm

By:Larm er Skandinavias største musikk-kongress som hvert år holdes i Oslo. Konseptet er todelt med en festival og en konferansedel. Festivalen skjer på kveldstid og er en glimrende anledning til å få med seg nye, spennende artister.

18.00 : Torgny

With a background in hardcore punk, amongst others as vocalist for the respected band Amulet, Torgny Amdam has now gone on to become a solo artist in his own right under the moniker Torgny. The debut album “Chameleon Days” was released in late Autumn 2010, and was described as something completely original that you want to listen to again and again. It is dark and melodic avant-garde pop that looks equally toward European electronic music as it does to American art-rock. “With no respect for genre boundaries, a curiosity and willingness to experiment with new instruments, Torgny marks himself to be a distinctly different pop artist” wrote the influential NRK Lydverket. Whilst Sudvest wrote “Versatile. Different. Recommended.” And musiknyheter.no described the record as “One of the most exciting Norwegian releases of 2010.”

Torgny has an ongoing collaboration with director Emil Trier on a video trilogy to accompany the record as if that was not enough they won “Best Scandinavian Music Video” at the Bergen International Film Festival in 2010 for “The Only Game”. Torgny delivered the goods live, making his debut at Øya last year, his unique live show is the meeting point between performance art, emotive lighting design and raw musical delivery.

20.00 : Morten Myklebust

It was the coldest by:Larm ever, in Trondheim back in 2007, when we first encountered singer / songwriter Morten Myklebust. Since then he’s mostly been working behind the scenes as guitarist and co-writer for pop artist Christel Alsos and occasionally as opener for Susanne Sundfør. He has though all the while been writing his own material for his debut L.P. which is now recorded and ready for release.

This coming spring Morten is planning to undertake his first solo tour proper with by:Larm and Canadian Music Week are already in the schedule.

21.00 : Carmen Villain

After several years of traveling the world, London based Carmen Hillestad (27) has for the past year locked herself away and focused entirely on music. Now finally her efforts see the light of day, as she has begun the recording process proper of her debut album at Oslo’s Malabar studio (amongst others). Carmen makes psychedelic, moody alt. rock and her powerful voice is the perfect balance of the dark and the beautiful. Royal Trux, Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Syd Barrett and Velvet Underground are amongst her biggest influences. She has thus far played only a handful of shows in Oslo, but off the back of these we can see that there is a lot more to come from Carmen Hillestad.

22.00 : Departure

Even though Departure are clearly a band who create beautifully catchy pop melodies, the band have a foot firmly planted on planet rock. The band have a clear identity of their own, in spite of clearly being influenced by current acts like The Killers, Jimmy Eat World and Your Vegas. But it’s precisely this makes Departure one of the most radio friendly and exciting bands to come out of Trondheim in a very very long time.

In spite of the short time the band have been together, they have already attracted quite a following mostly due to the quality of their well written songs.

The band have recently spent time in the studio recording their debut release entitled “Razorblades & Lemonades” to be ready for Autumn 2010. A hectic tour schedule will then include shows nationwide. Departure are aiming high and are ready to take on all challenges.

23.00 : Me And My Army (S)

Something that was originally envisaged as a one off, has now grown into a full blown Swedish super group. Me and My Army consists of members of Timo Räisinen’s band, Her Majesty and Roenik alongside Andreas Kleerup himself. He’s best known perhaps, aside from being a solo artist in his own right, for producing for the likes of Robyn, Lykke Li, Neneh Cherry and Tityo. With influences like Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Love and newer artists such as Bon Iver, this is a totally different side to Kleerup that we will now get to see.

M.A.M.A have had quite a buzz on them in Sweden this past year and after a handful of now legendary shows, anticipation for the EP slated for release in Autumn 2010 is sky high, with their debut album proper scheduled for early 2011.

24.00 : Brighton

Brighton are a band from Haugesund who play catchy indie pop, obvious reference points would be Swedish band Kent and The Killers, with their sound ranging from the introverted to the epic. The band’s lyrics have an almost unique narrative style each song telling its own story.

Their track “The Orchid” tells the tale of a cult member who escapes and becomes a bare knuckle boxer in the city and wishes he was back living the simple and harmonious life amongst the members of The Orchid.

“St. James Society” is about a philanthropic society who in the early 1900s were engaged in trying to cure opium addicts by giving them heroin.

“Alexander” is a story of a World War II fighter pilot who’s ambushed behind enemy lines.

Brighton began to pick up a bit of heat domestically after an NRK Urørt (band of the week)in Autumn 2010 and Bergensavisen (a big regional paper) proclaimed “St. James Society” as their track of the summer. The band have a whole host of shows in the run up to by:Larm and are currently recording their debut EP.
