JENNIE HAGEVIK BRINGAKER - ALENE MED HJERNEN

Jennie Hagevik Bringaker is presenting new work at Podium in her solo exhibition alene med hjernen 4-7th August. Through drawings and video Bringaker revisits the past by as physical memories, recalling her history by repeating it over again. Old stories reappear here in new versions, based on fragments from what was lost. Physical memories are etched onto our bodies, like tattoos we never asked for. The mutual dependency between the physical experience and a physical space potentially complicates the terms interior and exterior.

In the new video work Nordmarka, 13 juni the artist, together with childhood friend and artist Marthe Ramm Fortun, revisits sites from the past in the city forest. The video is shot by cinematographer Cecilie Semec, known from her collaborations with artists like Bodil Furu, Hanne Ramsdal and Sara Eliassen. The camerawork explores the subjective narrative to the extreme, and blurs the line between art films and nature documentary.

The title of the exhibition is taken from a song by Lars Lillo-Stenberg, Hjernen er alene. In the context of the show, the title points to at a state of mind, describing a sensation of no longer being able to distinguish the self from what is outside. The woods, the ocean or a house seem like results of the minds’ own creation, entrapping the self in a desolate, empty landscape.

The works question what is more of a constant: the outside or the inside. When you look at your face in the mirror, do you see yourself or the ghost of who was once there? How can you know what is real, when your mind relies on its own fragile constructions?

“Det er midt på dagen. Jeg er alene i huset
Jeg står midt i stuen
Jeg er alene i huset
Jeg stirrer ut av vinduet
Jeg stirrer ned mot havet
Med ett blir jeg redd
Jeg ser at havet kommer nærmere

Hjernen er alene
Hjernen er alene
Hjernen er alene

-Lars Lillo-Stenberg, 1989
