I WAS A KING

Indie rock outfit I Was a King were formed in Oslo, Norway by singer/songwriter/guitarist Frode Strømstad in 2006. Taking a cue from stalwart ‘90s shoegaze acts like Teenage Fanclub and My Bloody Valentine, as well as lo-fi power pop icons Guided by Voices and psychedelic rock royalty the Creation and Strawberry Alarm Clock, Strømstad released I Was a King’s debut, Losing Something Good for So…mething Better, in 2007. The album received accolades in its Scandinavian homeland as well as in the British press. Released in 2009, I Was a King’s eponymous sophomore effort featured appearances by Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), Sufjan Stevens, Daniel Smith (Danielson Famile), and Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor). On the group’s 2011 album Old Friends, Strømstad was again joined by Nikolaisen and Smith, among others, as he crafted his most impressively musical and memorable record yet.

ROBYN HITCHCOCK

Robyn Rowan Hitchcock is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. While primarily a vocalist and guitarist, he also plays harmonica, piano and bass guitar.

Coming to prominence in the late 1970s with The Soft Boys, Hitchcock afterward launched a prolific solo career. Hitchcock’s musical and lyrical styles have been influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Syd Barrett. Hitchcock’s lyrics tend to include surrealism, comedic elements, characterisations of English eccentrics, and melancholy depictions of everyday life.

He was signed to two major American labels (A&M Records, then Warner Brothers) over the course of the 1980s and ’90s, but mainstream success has been limited. Still, he has maintained a loyal cult following and has often earned strong critical reviews over a steady stream of album releases and live performances.

Tickets can be bought at Tiger for this special split-concert night at Revolver.
