Stian Westerhus
is one of Norways hardest working young musicians playing in bands like Nils Petter Molvær group, Monolithic, Puma, Bladed, Eldbjørg Raknes, Crimetime Orchestra and many more, as well as receiving awards like Young Norwegian Jazz Musician Of The Year, Molde International Jazz Festival Talent Award and Trondheim Jazzfestivals’s talent award in Norway, as well as BBC’s Award for Innovation in Jazz in the UK. Stian also collaborates with Jaga Jazzist and musicians like Sidsel Endresen, Zach Hill and many more. “The sense of menace is generated with huge energy by the belligerently brilliant Norwegian guitarist Westerhus who coaxes a plethora of tortured sounds from his axe, bowed notes elongating into harmonic dismemberment of epic proportions. Having been blessed with little or no respect for the instrument his performances balance raw expressiveness, virtuosity and melodic instinct utilizing his Norwegian heritage as well as growing up listening to Slayer. With a soundscape far beyond the standard guitar he seeks to push the boundaries for improvised music across the muddy waters of genres. Sigbjørn Apeland
(born 1966) is a Norwegian record producer, musician (organ, harmonium) and the only Norwegian to have obtained a doctorate in ethnomusicology. He is known for his distinctive mix of folk music, church music and improvised music. He works as an organist, and specialized in free jazz with the legendary British drummer John Stevens; he has contributed to numerous recordings with Nils Økland and Sigrid Moldestad, folk singers Åsne Valland Nordli, Berit Opheim Versto and Agnes Buen Garnås, jazz musicians Øyvind Skarbø, Per Jørgensen and Bjørn Kjellemyr, electronica innovators Alog and noise duo Golden Serenades, in addition to many others.
