American torture and human rights

The American response to 9/11 was a war against terror. In the media we often see American politicians or other government spokespersons that explain that they fight against dangerous terrorists to defend the glorious one and only democracy. They claim they are the good guys and that they will do anything to insure peace.

The first article of the universal declaration of human rights says: «All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.»

But is the US still acting according to these basic rights? What happens in jails like Guantanamo? What kind of role do the many secret services play in this war against terror? Are there so called «Black sites», jails nobody knows about, where people just disappear to?

One of our guest today is Larry Siems, the director of PEN American Center’s Freedom to Write and International Programs. He is the principal author of the book “The Torture Report”, and will be joined by Siri Gloppen who’s a Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Bergen.

The meeting is held in collaboration with Norwegian PEN
