Character – Editor – Story
- Character development and dramaturgy from the film editors point of view in fiction films.


Together with N:F:K Norske Filmklippere, NFI:LAB presents a seminar with two of the European film industry’s most exiting Film Editors, Juliette Welfling and Nicolas Chaudeurge. Opening speaker and moderator for the whole day is renowned dramaturg Maureen Thomas.

What is the editor’s contribution in the realization of a character? What are the parallels between the writer and the editor? How do the choices in the editing room materialize the character and impact the story? The editors will discuss and present excerpts from their previous works from script to finished film. Participants are encouraged to join the discussion from their professions point of view.

About Juliette Welfling

Juliette Welfling is a renowned French film editor. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Film Editing for her work in the 2007 movie The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. She has received the César Award for Best Editing for her work on this film as well as for four Jacques Audiard films: Regarde les hommes tomber (1994), The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005), A Prophet (2009), and Rust and Bone (2012). Most recently she edited Asghar Farhadi’s The Past (2013), in Norway distributed by Arthaus.


About Nicolas Chaudeurge

Nicolas Chaudeurge is one of the most talented editors currently working in film and television.Trained at the National Film and Television School in London, he has been editing drama and documentary for seventeen years in both the UK and France. He has edited over twenty award winning shorts including the Oscar winning Wasp (2003). His successful collaborations with Andrea Arnold have produced award winners, including a BAFTA for both Red Road (2006), Fish Tank (2009) and most recently Wuthering Heights (2011).


About Maureen Thomas

Maureen Thomas has been a Head Tutor at the National Film & Television School, UK and Professor 2 at the Norwegian Film School; a Senior Creative Research Fellow of the Narrativity Studio, Interactive Institute, Sweden; and Visiting Artist, Media Lab, Aalto University, Helsinki. She is a visiting tutor at Goldsmiths London Digital Studios; Newport Film School Screen Academy; Iceland Academy of the Arts; Estonia Academy of the Arts; Piteä School of Music and Media and Stockholm University of Dramatic Arts.

Maureen is a member of the editorial board of the journal Digital Creativity. She is a Senior Research Associate at the Department of Architecture’s Digital Studio (www.expressivespace.org), which she co-founded with François Penz (Professor, Architecture and the Moving Image) in 1998.
