Next Life // James Welburn

NEXT LIFE is Hai Nguyen Dinh from Tønsberg, Norway. Utlizing old school chip synths from Commodore 64, Amiga and FM-based sounds, combined with rock guitar, turns Next Life’s sound into a brutal, yet melodic and crystal clear expression of restless progression. Next Life is kind of an innovation of the developing hardcore punk sound from the ‘90s, akin to bands like The Locust, Botch and Converge. Though Next Life is purely instrumental, replacing voice with narrative synth-lines.

Next Life released their first album back in 2000 and have altogether done 3 full lenghts and 4 mini albums. Their latest output “The Akashic Record” was released in 2018 by Gaffer Records and Etch Wear, and actualy does feature highly brutal Monster X-like vocals, for the first time. They have played more than 200 shows altogether in Europe and USA, opened for Meshuggah, Zeni Geva, Flying Luttebachers, and more.

The Next Life show is multimedial and highly visual, and impossible for your brain to miss provided that it is present at the time of happening. Must see!

JAMES WELBURN’s debut album ‘Hold’ (Miasmah) was described as “Like watching a massive twisting fire slowly fading into the open skies”, accompanied by the repetitive yet mind bending drumming of Tony Buck (The Necks) it travelled far, receiving much critical acclaim.

“… Full of sounds and structures to get lost in, to bathe in the layers and wade through the textures that Welburn constructs with consummate skill…marks him out as a solo artist and collaborationist to watch” – The Quietus.

Today Welburn performs a live set on the boundary between noise rock and electronica, modifying dirty electric bass sounds with abstract software effects into dark engulfing soundscapes and searing bass drones that breathe with a mysterious forceful energy. A relentless rhythm section powered by Andre Drage (NO, Idfjell, Kennel, Tip the Scales) drives the music forward, forming epic compositions of sound and noise.

Live highlights have included the NEXT Advanced Music Festival in Bratislava (SK), Rewire Festival in Den Haag and Incubate festival in Tilburg (NE), FLUSSI Media Arts Festival (IT), Hradby Samoty in Rosice (CZ), The Woodland Gathering in Cumbria (UK), Svart Oktober in Oslo and Nødutgang festival in Bodø (NO).
