2023! celebrates 25 years of now, and this gig is also the launch for the new album Functionality Is Convenient (released 1/5/23 on Beauty & Disgust as download & CD).

now was founded in 1998 by songwriter Justin Paton with the aim of bringing together adventurous multi-instrumentalists who are as much in love with electronics as guitars, tambourines and classical instruments. To date, the band’s live line-up has varied from Justin solo to double-figures and has involved collaborations with such noted underground musicians as Damo Suzuki (Can) and Charles Hayward (This Heat). The latest line-up = JP (voc+gtr), Mark Smith (bass) & Kevin Barthelemy (drums). They might strip the klassix down and rock it trad, might do a handful from the new album, and might do a couple never performed live before. It might be different to how you’ve heard now before! 2023!

Masselys further illuminate the path of mutated electro, corrosive disco, and mischievous avant-rock, following their 2016 album High Fantasy Low Fantasy (released on UK experimental pop and dance label Mottomotto). In the physical realm, they are zoned in Oslo, where they have been known for collaborating with figures such as Christopher Nielsen and Viviana Vega. Currently they describe their music as “the architecture of refugees from architecture”, although this may be no more than a ruse. Certainly, the “high fantasy” element remains a theme, with Masselys allegedly composing “steam-powered fantasies for the far-future generation”, and “the sound of the shape of water to come”. The staged line-up of Masselys is: Kjell-Olav Jørgensen (drummer, percussionist, pipe smoker), Bjarne Larsen (guitarist, bassist, bicyclist), John Birger Wormdahl (guitarist, keyboardist, bassist, samplesaurus, axeman), Jonas Hestvik Dahl (guitarist, keyboardist, carbon bassist), Helgar Torgvær (theophrastic vocalist), and Jessica Kiil (righteous chanteuse), plus abraxas element.
