One would expect from a performer that her research focused on expanding the range of playing techniques, liberating herself from old ways and habits and thereby making an even closer, more intimate bond with her instrument. And surely Victoria Johnson’s exploration of the electric violin’s properties and capabilities does contain this. But in addition – and maybe as a result of the instrument’s capabilities and properties – her project also contains another aspect. In addition to immersing herself in her instrument, she has experimented with and broadened the relationship with the instrument – and not only with the violin, but the relationship between herself, the instrument, a significant number of musicians, composers and visual artists as well as technologies, modes of presentation and discourses. In seemingly random constellations she has been working on the once transparent line between performer and work, between performer and instrument, and between performer and audience. Instead of delivering interpretations of existing works, she has created these pieces and improvisations in collaborations with the composers.
